Makeup artist Yacine Diallo shares her 5 best red lipsticks
So a couple of weeks ago I focused on red lipsticks, and this week, I’m doing it again! Only this time, you’re getting faves and tips from an amazing makeup artist, Yacine Diallo. I’ve been following this French-beauty-living-in-New-York for quite some time now, and she is forever dropping bombs when it comes to product recommendations. Most of the time, she lets her (flawless) skin shine through with subtle makeup, but a few weeks ago she posted a selfie wearing a red lip. Needless to say, I had to know exactly which red it was, and this started a DM convo. So, here Yacine has kindly chosen her top 5 best red lipsticks - and she’s made sure she hasn’t repeated any from my previous blog!
Sephora Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick in 01 Always Red
This will stay FOR-EVER on your lips! Maybe even after you’ve gone through three cotton pads soaked with cleansing oil. Okay, I’m joking, but only just. You definitely need a good makeup remover to take it off. It’s a creamy, matte, bright red that works on most people – it’s kind of a classic now. It’s also one of the most long-lasting reds I’ve used lately. Never underestimate the quality of Sephora products – this stuff is good.
Tata Harper Volumizing Cheek & Lip tint in Very Naughty- tres coquine en français
The trend for luxury ‘natural’ products is getting to all of us – and Tata Harper does it really well. I love the name of this little bad boy (of course). Just wearing it makes you feel that you’re immediately a better, sexier version of yourself, which – let’s be honest – we all want sometimes!
This balm is quite a deep red, but goes on creamy and semi-sheer on your lips; you can build up the intensity from a little stain to a sheer red lipstick and you can also use it as a blush. It gives you a gorgeous flush of colour and is a great way to enhance your lips naturally.
If you don’t like using your fingers, this might not be for you. You can of course use a brush, but it’s more a product that you carry around in your purse and reapply with your fingers, whenever you need a little pick-me-up. I have it in my bag all the time – especially when I travel. Also, the packaging is cute!
Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Extrême in 112 Ideal
I can’t make a list of best red lipsticks without including a Chanel lipstick. It’s one of my favourite brands, not only for the products but also the packaging, its history, its savoir faire – and maybe also because I’m French, so it’s a brand I’ve always been familiar with, especially seeing my mother wear their lipsticks. It’s always a go-to brand of lipstick for me, and they have some amazing reds. My latest obsession is this ultra matte version; I’ve always loved the Rouge Allure Velvet range – it’s really next level – very matte, very pigmented, very velvety, but still comfortable.
The colour is a classic Hollywood red – not too orange, not too blue… You want to apply it with a brush and really take your time to apply several layers. Make sure to blot your lips in between each layer to achieve that perfect, velvet lip.
Oh and if you’re into the packaging, this is matte black, beautiful and really luxurious!
Laura Mercier Velour Extreme Matte Lipstick in Control - it’s the one Yacine is wearing in the main image.
Laura Mercier is that brand that everyone knows for the skincare – like her famous tinted moisturiser – but the brand has always offered the perfect lipstick ‘wardrobe’. These new matte babies come in 24 shades. The bullet is small so it’s good for a more precise application; it’s creamy, comfortable and pretty long-lasting.
I like Control because it has this colour that you’ll see in the red bricks of New York apartment buildings, or in a glass of Bordeaux!
Basically, it’s a deep red colour, with a little bit of brown. I particularly like it on darker complexions.
NARS Semi Matte Lipstick in Red Lizard
I love Nars for everything when it comes to colour, whether that’s eye shadows or lipsticks. This is a classic, vibrant red that’s pretty universal. It’s well-pigmented, like all Nars products. It gives me the colour of a ripe red fruit and the formula is semi-matte, but it’s not dry at all. It has pretty good staying power and leaves a beautiful stain as it wears off.
